"Interestingly, neither of the companies that were acquired, GirlSense.com by IAC and PixVerse by hi5, have actually produced virtual worlds. The former is a virtual fashion site and social network and the latter produces apps for social networks," notes Joey Seiler, Virtual Worlds Management author. "Both, however, have been discussed, or self-described, as having potential for virtual worlds, showing an eye toward the future. Those, combined with 4 investments in pre-launch companies, highlight the still emerging nature of the industry. We should see some exciting new developments at the Virtual Worlds Expo taking place September 3-4 in Los Angeles."
$184 million dollars was invested in 23 virtual worlds in Q1 2008, putting the full worth of investments for the half year at $345 million. A full list of investors for Q2 2008 can be found here.
Developed by Atomic Motion, Raven Squad puts players in control of two mercenary squads looking to escape from behind enemy lines in the Amazonian jungle. The game looks to uniquely combine both real-time strategy elements with first-person shooter gameplay, allowing players to switch freely between the two. Don't get comfortable with just one mode, though. Players will have to master both to survive.
"Raven Squad combines two extremely popular genres into a single robust experience where either gameplay mode could stand on its own merits," said Melanie Mroz, CEO of SouthPeak Games. "Atomic Motion is creating something that's visually compelling and building new boundaries in what a military title can accomplish. Fans of both RTS and FPS games are going to love it, as will anyone who enjoys intense, action titles."
Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger is set to release this fall.
The simulation currently being used places the female participant in an automobile passenger seat of a car on a dark, rainy day next to a male actor who will control the virtual driver. The female then puts on a head-mounted video display that senses head movement and an audio headset.
The actor can control his virtual self with facial expressions and movement through a video keyboard and even map his lips to sync his in-game avatar. The virtual-driver has the ability to nod, shrug, and even pound the steering wheel out of anger, creating a very realistic scenario. The female will be drawn into a conversation that will eventually turn aggressive and demand sexual intimacy.
"We created an enclosed environment," says Jeff Perryman, Guildhall lecturer, who worked on the program with Tony Cuevas, Guildhall deputy director. "We wanted our participant to feel powerless. The rain was added to isolate her. The car is particularly creepy- we worked hard at that."
Earnest Jouriles, professor and chair of psychology, says that while role-playing is an established means in teaching people to deal with social problems, he hit a wall when he tried the same method to teach relationship violence.
"The role-playing produced giggles," Jouriles says. "And from my perspective, it didn't capture the imagination of the students."
62 undergraduate women were randomly assigned to either traditional or virtual reality role-play and were asked to fill out a questionnaire afterward. Those who experienced the virtual scenario rated the experience to be much more realistic than those of the role-play group.
Jouriles claimed the results were "very promising" and that hopes to see some variation of the program used in high schools and colleges. "This is a potential breakthrough opportunity for gaming technology - to help solve an important social problem."
The biggest move comes from a planned sale of Razorworks, which it acquired in 2000. Razorworks is comprised "solely of a development team and physical assets," said Empire, and the sale will not involve giving up any intellectual property or affect any current projects. Empire intends to continue to use outside developers for game development. It's unclear at the moment who will purchase Razorworks, but Empire said it's "currently in negotiations with potential acquirers and looks to complete the transaction in the coming weeks."
The divestiture of Razorworks will ultimately lead in a headcount reduction of about 30 percent at Empire, and this is expected to deliver cash flow savings of approximately $3.0 million per year, the company said.
Furthermore, beyond the sale, Empire is reorganizing its executive management team through promotions, and the company also is planning a relocation of its headquarters to a modern facility near Muswell Hill, a suburb in north London.
"The changes at Empire mark an important new direction for the company as we head into fiscal 2009. These significant cost savings and managerial changes, along with our planned fiscal 2009 game line-up, position the company for a strong fiscal 2009," stated Clive Kabatznik, CEO of Silverstar Holdings.
"We are very excited about the union of EB Games and Gamesman," commented Stephen Wilson, Managing Director, EB Games New Zealand and Australia. "Both companies and their staff have a passion for games and now we can bring together the best of both retailers to offer our customers the finest in service and products, both new and pre-owned."
"We would like to thank our customers and staff for their support," remarked Phil McPhee, General Manager at The Gamesman. "This move will enhance the service and experience for customers, and our staff will benefit from the support structure and career opportunities available through GameStop."
