Remember the name Michael Fromwiller, because he just ruined your life.

An amateur game maker and World of Warcraft junkie, the San Jose State undergrad decided to break more than a few laws by creating an unauthorized clone of the great puzzle game Bejeweled (called, laughingly, Besharded) that could be played in the middle of a Warcraft session. While such insolence normally leads to a barrage of cease and desist letters, Bejeweled publisher PopCap Games opted for a much different strategy.

They hired him.

Soon, the fruit of his labor will create what might possibly be the most addictive game of all-time, as Bejeweled is set to appear as a free downloadable add-on for World of Warcraft on Thursday.

According to a preview at WoW Insider, the classic match-three timewaster is intended to be played during long flights across Azeroth and includes nifty features like persistent high score lists and in-game achievements. And if you happen to stumble into combat while swapping gems, the Bejeweled game screen will kindly disappear -- sort of like our social lives after this beast arrives.

Resident Evil Remake Comes to Wii

Kotaku is reporting that Resident Evil will be releasing on Wii. The version of the game will be based upon the GCN remake originally released in 2002. Resident Evil will release on the Wii on December 25 in Japan.

Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 0 have both been re-released on the Wii, but only the former has come stateside. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, an on-rails shooter, was developed specifically for the Wii and released in 2007. Not new news, but information on this game, for Wii.

Spore Sells Over One Million Copies; 25 Million Creations Uploaded

DRM controversy aside, EA's Spore is officially a hit. EA announced today that the evolution-based game from Will Wright has now sold over one million units worldwide since it shipped on September 7 for PC, Mac and Nintendo DS. EA also announced that the Spore universe has been populated with more than 25 million creations so far, including creatures, vehicles and buildings.

"Spore is a hit," said Frank Gibeau, president of the EA Games Label. "Will Wright's latest delivers an incredibly diverse game that appeals to casual gamers and the core alike. We're off to a great start moving into the holiday season and believe Spore will deliver a platform of creativity for gamers of all stripes for years to come."

"We're humbled by how quickly the community has taken to the creativity tools in Spore," said Lucy Bradshaw, vice president of Maxis and Spore's executive producer. "It's amazing to see the sheer imagination represented in the hundreds of thousands of creatures, vehicles and buildings that have been uploaded around the clock since launch."

Rumor: Nintendo Planning New Widescreen DS

We all know that Nintendo loves to redesign its handhelds (look at the GBA), and some might argue that the ubiquitous DS handheld is now due for another redesign. Considering that Sony is launching a new PSP with a brighter LCD screen and Apple's iPhone seems to be resonating quite well with the games industry, the timing could be right for Nintendo to "refresh" the DS hardware or possibly launch an all-new DS with more powerful specs and other features.

Today IGN is reporting on "leaked information" that a DS redesign is indeed coming around an April-May 2009 timeframe. According to the report, the new DS design will incorporate touchscreen functionality on both screens and at least one screen will be in the widescreen aspect ratio.

At this point, nothing is confirmed. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told GameDaily BIZ that if Nintendo does plan to "refresh" the DS, launching "this fall in Japan is smarter, and they can cut the price of the DS everywhere else to clear the way for a U.S./European launch in April or May."
