Report: Take-Two Legally Unable to Make GTA Movie

Today, LA Weekly blogger Nikki Finke commented on the likelihood of a movie based around the Grand Theft Auto games. She reports that Fox Atomic owns the rights to Grand Theft Auto, a 1977 movie by Ron Howard (who would later direct Cocoon, Cinderella Man and A Beautiful Mind). Because of a legal agreement between Fox and Take-Two, the former can't make a game version of their movie and the latter cannot make a movie version of their game. Despite the continued popularity (and notoriety) of the Grand Theft Auto name, Fox has shown no inclination to make a movie sequel to the Roger Corman film.

"Yes, Fox owns the Corman movie," said an insider to Finke. "Yes, it has been one of 400 development projects for several years. But they are nowhere on the script. It has certainly not been a front-burner project."

New AMD Chip Lets Game Developers 'Sip from'Holy Grail'

AMD, the chip maker that owns graphic card manufacturer ATI, has unveiled a new chip codenamed "RV770" that has the power to calculate a trillion floating point operations per second (teraflops). Based on this chip, AMD showed what they're calling a Cinema 2.0 demo in San Francisco and boasted that it's "more powerful than every generation of game console ever brought to market combined" and "achieves [an] industry milestone that was presumed to be years away."

This Cinema 2.0 experience demonstrates "the fusion of dynamic real-time interactivity with convincing cinematic digital effects that appear to be real places and things captured on video." The company further boasted that the technology will "punch a hole in the sensory barrier between cinema and games."

AMD believes that once movie directors, visual effects artists, game developers and others get their hands on this technology that the door will be burst open for "unprecedented engaging entertainment experiences."

"With Cinema 2.0 you won't just play movies, you'll play in them. Imagine the ability to look around the environments in a sci-fi movie, put yourself in the driver's seat in a race scene, duck behind things and pop up to see what's going on in an intense firefight – all of these things are possible with Cinema 2.0," said Charlie Boswell, director, Digital Media & Entertainment, AMD. "The challenge for any director has always been taking a wonderful vision in the canvas of the mind and translating that to film for the audience to see. Cinema 2.0 breaks down the time and cost barriers of getting a scene or shot that's 'just right', and what's better, allows audiences to dive deeper into the experience to explore every part of that director's vision."

"Today's demonstration of Cinema 2.0 represents a sip from the multi-billion dollar gaming industry's Holy Grail, while presenting a new quest to digital filmmakers," said Richard Huddy, worldwide developer relations manager, AMD Graphics Product Group. "Imagine going to the opening of a movie and upon getting home being able to play a game that looks and feels absolutely identical – right down to the character models and sets."

AMD says that this kind of leap forward in interactive realism was previously thought to be at least 10 years away, but the company intends to get the technology out there soon as part of its ATI Radeon HD branded graphics cards, which will no doubt cost a very pretty penny.

While Sony's PlayStation 3 is equipped with a GPU from Nvidia, both Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii utilize graphic chipsets from ATI. It'll be quite interesting to see how this technology evolves and if it ultimately ends up powering one or more consoles in the next round years from now.

More information on AMD's new technology is available here.

PS3 Firmware 2.40 Confirmed to Bring In-Game XMB Access and 'Trophies'

Sony Computer Entertainment America's Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, has confirmed on the official PlayStation blog that version 2.40 of the PS3 firmware will finally bring the much requested in-game access to the XMB (Xross Media Bar), Sony's equivalent of the Xbox 360 dashboard.

The system software update will also introduce "Trophies," which Sony says is "an exciting new feature that we'll be providing more details on soon." Judging by past hints, however, this is likely the Achievement-like reward system for PS3 games. Lempel also noted that there will be other new enhancements. Unfortunately, he does not provide a date for the launch of firmware 2.40 but promises to share more details "shortly."

In the meantime, it appears that firmware version 2.36 is now available. This update simply "improves system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles."

God of War PSP Dev Talks About Ending PSP Development

Following the news that Ready at Dawn is "officially done" with PSP development, our friends at Joystiq caught up with the developer behind God of War: Chains of Olympus and Daxter to find out what prompted this decision.

Ready At Dawn's president, Didier Malenfant, commented, "We feel like we've done everything we wanted to do with the PSP. We have new projects on other platforms and we like to focus on one thing at a time."

Some speculation had pointed to piracy as one of the reasons for Ready at Dawn moving away from PSP, but that doesn't appear to be the case. "We sold over 2.3 millions copies of Daxter and are on track to beat that with Chains of Olympus so we're pretty happy with our sales," noted Malenfant. "Could we sell more games if piracy was non-existent? Maybe. But we don't target the market that could be, we target the market that is."

So what's Ready at Dawn working on now? Malenfant wouldn't specify other than to say that the studio has two original IPs in development and "some neat ideas with an existing IP." He added, "Most of that stuff is next-gen, but we'll see as we move forward what turns into games and/or what goes in different directions."

And who knows, perhaps one of these IPs will make to the PSP down the line. "You can never say never so we're not going to say you won't see any ports of our future games on PSP," he said.

GRID Taking Off in Japan

Today, Codemasters announced that GRID will be localized for a Japanese release later this year. The game already features Japanese specific content, including locations such as Tokyo Shibuya, Yokohama and Haruna in addition to Drift and Touge race events. Codemasters is hoping GRID will be successful like their other racing franchise, DiRT, has been in Japan.

"As Codemasters continues to gain significant ground in the global videogame business, the release of GRID in Japan will also see the arrival of the Codemasters brand as a publishing label in the market," said Rod Cousens, CEO, Codemasters. "We have pursued options in the market for some time and this announcement is but a first indication of our ambitions in that market."

"The recent success of key western titles in Japan is indicative of the current trend where Japanese gamers are not only more aware of popular western gaming brands but actively seeking them out," continued Cousens. "With GRID set to be fully localized and arrive bundled with DiRT, it is an opportune time for Codemasters to enjoy brand success in Japan."

GRID is available now in the U.S. for PS3, PC, Xbox 360 and DS.

iPhone to Kill Nintendo DS? What is Forbes Smoking?

Over at Forbes Brian Caulfield has posted an editorial piece on "Why Apple Could Kill the Nintendo DS." He argues that the upcoming app store for the iPhone combined with the device's already slick touch-screen and motion sensing capability will make Apple a very tough foe in the handheld gaming arena.

"Unlike Nintendo, which has created a gaming console with a motion-sensitive controller and a touch-sensitive handheld gaming system, Apple has crammed both capabilities into its iPhone and iPod Touch," he writes. "The ability to pour fresh software into the iPhone, wirelessly, at the touch of a button already has game developers interested. ... The worst sign: Sophisticated games such as Electronic Arts' ambitious new god-game, Spore, are already slated to be released for the iPhone at the same time it goes on sale for PCs, Macs and the Nintendo DS. ... Looks like the handheld gaming business, so long dominated by Nintendo, could be about to undergo a little evolution too."

With all due respect Mr. Caulfield, you are talking nonsense. We couldn't help but laugh when we read the article, but just to make sure we weren't losing our marbles we checked in with two prominent analysts. Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter noted that it's really about "different markets, hip wealthy people vs. kids." He added, "My kids each have a DS, and my wife has an iPhone. The article is too stupid to even discuss." Harsh.

DFC Intelligence's David Cole agreed 100 percent. Regarding Forbes' premise he commented, "I think it is just people that don't really know the industry looking to hype the next big thing. Cell phones in general were supposed to kill Nintendo's business many years ago. The DS sold 30 million units last year. The iPhone has been out less than a year, but I think quarterly sales have been between like 1-2 million units."

Looking at official numbers from Apple, we can see that the iPhone sold 1.119 million units in the 2007 July – September quarter (which at the time brought cumulative fiscal 2007 sales to 1.389 million), 2.315 million units in the 2007 October – December quarter, and 1.703 million units in the most recent January – March period.

"That isn't even in the same league as the DS...DS shipments have been between 6-11 million per quarter over the past year," Cole pointed out. "The other issue is that an average cell phone has a lifespan of two years and a much higher retirement factor than the DS."

Needless to say, Nintendo has nothing to fear. Mario and co. will likely continue dominating the handheld scene for quite some time.

PlayStation Goes to School

Via the PlayStation Blog, SCEA Senior Manager of Developer Support Mark Danks revealed a new program called PlayStation-edu. Universities and colleges will now have the opportunity to purchase PS2 and PSP development kits directly from Sony. Danks hopes that the PlayStation-edu program will make students in secondary education ready to program on PlayStation hardware when they graduate.

"PlayStation-edu is not a general game creation program (sorry artists and designers)," said Danks. "It is for computer science and engineering students who want to understand how the hardware works in the PlayStation consoles. Schools which teach game programming or computer architecture can use the development kits in their classes. Participants will get demo code and samples, as well as documentation about how things work. We want the dev kits used in the classroom! Students in PlayStation-edu will have access to our support web site where they can talk with other students in the program on our forums."

Educators interested in participating in PlayStation-edu should contact Danks at applications@psp-edu.scedev.net.
