Gears of War Movie Will Be Legendary

Variety is reporting that Legendary Pictures will co-finance and co-produce the Gears of War movie. It is the first New Line film that Legendary has signed since it became part of Warner Bros. earlier this year.
"Legendary's appetite for the synthesis of gaming, film and pop culture meshes perfectly with our own," said Epic Games President Mark Rein in a statement.
Currently, Len Wiseman is set to direct the Gears of War film, with writing credits going to Chris Morgan. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will produce Gears of War under the Temple Hill brand and Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski will consult and executive produce the film.
Despite original plans for a Summer 2009 release for the Gears of War movie, it seems likely that it will get shifted back to some later date. The game Gears of War 2 is set to release on Xbox 360 in November 2008.

Pachter: 1 Million Xbox Live Gold Members to Join Netflix by '09

One of the big announcements from Microsoft during the company's E3 conference was its new partnership with Netflix to bring streaming movies from the service to Xbox Live. And while Microsoft sees the deal as a way to enhance the value of their videos service, the real winner is probably Netflix.

According to Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, the "low hanging fruit" of 10.5 million Xbox 360 owners in the U.S. could be a boon for Netflix as it looks to add more revenue though digital services. "As Microsoft rolls out deployment of Netflix on Xbox Live, we expect to see as many as 1 million Xbox Live Gold members become Netflix customers," he said. "We think that this could happen by the end of 2009."

Between Xbox streaming and a new premium pricing plan for Blu-ray usage, Pachter believes Netflix will continue to improve its bottom line. "Twenty cents here, twenty cents there, and pretty soon we are talking about real money. We expect to see contribution from these initiatives gradually, with the greatest contribution likely coming from new Xbox Live subscribers signing up as Netflix customers," he said. "...we are confident that Netflix is heading in the right direction, and are confident that it can deliver earnings upside for the next six quarters."

Nintendo Adds More Detail to Wii Remote

While gamers have enjoyed the thrill of controlling games in a 3-D world with the Wii Remote, one of the most talked about negatives has been the lack of accurate controls that would help separate the pros from the novices.
This morning, Nintendo announced the new Wii MotionPlus accessory that will add that very capability to the Wii Remote. The company says that the new device, which attaches to the bottom of the current Wii Remote, will provide a true 1:1 response to a player's real-world movements in game.
Merely a teaser, Nintendo plans to announce more details about the device Tuesday morning at E3 2008 during its keynote address. Of course, GameDaily will be on hand to see what the big N will tell.

Report: Virtual World Investments Equal $161 Million Dollars in Q2 2008

Virtual Worlds Management today announced results of a study of transactions relating to virtual worlds companies. The findings show that media and venture capital firms have invested more than $161 million dollars in 16 virtual worlds-related companies during the second quarter of 2008. These results do not include two companies that were acquired for undisclosed sums.

"Interestingly, neither of the companies that were acquired, GirlSense.com by IAC and PixVerse by hi5, have actually produced virtual worlds. The former is a virtual fashion site and social network and the latter produces apps for social networks," notes Joey Seiler, Virtual Worlds Management author. "Both, however, have been discussed, or self-described, as having potential for virtual worlds, showing an eye toward the future. Those, combined with 4 investments in pre-launch companies, highlight the still emerging nature of the industry. We should see some exciting new developments at the Virtual Worlds Expo taking place September 3-4 in Los Angeles."

$184 million dollars was invested in 23 virtual worlds in Q1 2008, putting the full worth of investments for the half year at $345 million. A full list of investors for Q2 2008 can be found here.

Official: Activision and Vivendi Games Complete Merger

As was expected following stockholder approval earlier this week, Activision and Vivendi Games today announced that the transaction to create Activision Blizzard has been completed. The deal, which officially closed on July 9, gives birth to "the world's most profitable pure-play online and console game publisher."

"The completion of this transaction marks the beginning of an important new chapter in the history of interactive entertainment," said Robert Kotick, President and Chief Executive Officer of Activision Blizzard. "By combining leaders in mass-market entertainment and subscription-based online games, Activision Blizzard has leading market positions across all categories of the rapidly growing interactive entertainment software industry. With more than 10.7 million subscribers on World of Warcraft, and with tens of millions of people playing Guitar Hero, Activision Blizzard's games are transcending the traditional stereotypes and are more popular as a form of entertainment than ever before. We look forward to building upon our brands to create value for our shareholders, customers and consumers."

"We are delighted that the merger has been completed. We are very excited about the opportunity for Activision Blizzard to create a broader entertainment software platform," stated René Pénisson, Chairman of Activision Blizzard. "We are leaders across North America and Europe and are creating a substantial footprint in the rapidly growing Asian market. We are determined to 'think big'!"

"From the beginning, our goal has been to make the best games in the world, and this transaction strengthens our ability to do just that," said Mike Morhaime, Blizzard Entertainment cofounder and Chief Executive Officer. "As part of Activision Blizzard we'll have the reach and resources to share our games with an even wider audience - while maintaining the same approach as always to providing high-quality entertainment and services to our players."

Jean Bernard Lévy, CEO of Vivendi, added, "We have created the world leader in online and console games with this transaction and the combined strengths of the two businesses offer immense growth potential. I am also very confident that, with the new leadership team in place, the new entity is perfectly positioned to take advantage of these rapidly developing markets across the globe."

Southpeak Announces Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger

Southpeak Games has announced Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger for PC and Xbox 360 platforms.

Developed by Atomic Motion, Raven Squad puts players in control of two mercenary squads looking to escape from behind enemy lines in the Amazonian jungle. The game looks to uniquely combine both real-time strategy elements with first-person shooter gameplay, allowing players to switch freely between the two. Don't get comfortable with just one mode, though. Players will have to master both to survive.

"Raven Squad combines two extremely popular genres into a single robust experience where either gameplay mode could stand on its own merits," said Melanie Mroz, CEO of SouthPeak Games. "Atomic Motion is creating something that's visually compelling and building new boundaries in what a military title can accomplish. Fans of both RTS and FPS games are going to love it, as will anyone who enjoys intense, action titles."

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger is set to release this fall.

The title's performance also ranks it as "one of Activision's top five best-selling launches of any title on any platform in the company's history."

"Guitar Hero is one of the most successful entertainment properties and continues to push the boundaries of innovation with Guitar Hero: On Tour," said Mike Griffith, President and Chief Executive Officer, Activision Publishing, Inc. "The game's breakthrough peripheral brings the Guitar Hero experience to the 41 million DS users in North America and Europe, where they can play anywhere, anytime."

Game Technology to Help Women With Dating Violence

Women interested in protecting themselves from sexual assault may be turning to virtual reality for strategies in the future. Dedman College's Psychology Department and The Guildhall at SMU have begun experimenting with virtual programs that put women in situations where they can understand and avoid potential problems that occur with dating violence.

The simulation currently being used places the female participant in an automobile passenger seat of a car on a dark, rainy day next to a male actor who will control the virtual driver. The female then puts on a head-mounted video display that senses head movement and an audio headset.

The actor can control his virtual self with facial expressions and movement through a video keyboard and even map his lips to sync his in-game avatar. The virtual-driver has the ability to nod, shrug, and even pound the steering wheel out of anger, creating a very realistic scenario. The female will be drawn into a conversation that will eventually turn aggressive and demand sexual intimacy.

"We created an enclosed environment," says Jeff Perryman, Guildhall lecturer, who worked on the program with Tony Cuevas, Guildhall deputy director. "We wanted our participant to feel powerless. The rain was added to isolate her. The car is particularly creepy- we worked hard at that."

Earnest Jouriles, professor and chair of psychology, says that while role-playing is an established means in teaching people to deal with social problems, he hit a wall when he tried the same method to teach relationship violence.

"The role-playing produced giggles," Jouriles says. "And from my perspective, it didn't capture the imagination of the students."

62 undergraduate women were randomly assigned to either traditional or virtual reality role-play and were asked to fill out a questionnaire afterward. Those who experienced the virtual scenario rated the experience to be much more realistic than those of the role-play group.

Jouriles claimed the results were "very promising" and that hopes to see some variation of the program used in high schools and colleges. "This is a potential breakthrough opportunity for gaming technology - to help solve an important social problem."

Empire Interactive Selling Razorworks, Will Cut Staff by 30%

Publisher Empire Interactive (a subsidiary of Silverstar Holdings), known for titles such as Starsky & Hutch, Big Mutha Truckers, Ford Racing and FlatOut, announced today that the company has "implemented a number of organizational changes designed to maximize efficiencies within the company, eliminate certain unprofitable operations, and better position the company for growth."

The biggest move comes from a planned sale of Razorworks, which it acquired in 2000. Razorworks is comprised "solely of a development team and physical assets," said Empire, and the sale will not involve giving up any intellectual property or affect any current projects. Empire intends to continue to use outside developers for game development. It's unclear at the moment who will purchase Razorworks, but Empire said it's "currently in negotiations with potential acquirers and looks to complete the transaction in the coming weeks."

The divestiture of Razorworks will ultimately lead in a headcount reduction of about 30 percent at Empire, and this is expected to deliver cash flow savings of approximately $3.0 million per year, the company said.

Furthermore, beyond the sale, Empire is reorganizing its executive management team through promotions, and the company also is planning a relocation of its headquarters to a modern facility near Muswell Hill, a suburb in north London.

"The changes at Empire mark an important new direction for the company as we head into fiscal 2009. These significant cost savings and managerial changes, along with our planned fiscal 2009 game line-up, position the company for a strong fiscal 2009," stated Clive Kabatznik, CEO of Silverstar Holdings.
