Everquest-Themed Online CCG Launches

Over 375 virtual cards with $2.99 booster packs.

Getting tired of having to deal with the physical presence of other human beings just to enjoy pwning them in Magic: The Gathering? Is the dank comic store basement atmosphere just not cutting it any more? Then, boy, does Sony Online Entertainment have a deal for you. As of today, they have officially launched Legends of Norrath, an online CCG (Collectible Card Game) based off the world and characters of Everquest and Everquest II.
Legends of Norrath draws upon the rich and insanely extensive Everquest lore to provide 375 cards, with the twist from most CCGs being that they're all digital. Collecting and gameplaying is done via a free client downloadable on the Legends of Norrath website.
While the client is free, in true CCG fashion cards must be paid for, thus earning SOE money off of the adult equivalent of "Gotta catch 'em all" Pokemon fever. The virtual cards are purchaseable in two types: a 55-card starter deck for $9.99 or 15-card booster packs for $2.99. There are four starter deck choices based on classic Everquest archetypes -- mage, priest, scout, and fighter. You can also buy a Booster Box (the big boxes full of booster packs that you'd find in real-life card shops) for $99.99. If you do happen to get all 375 cards and build that perfect deck, no worries, as SOE already has at least a couple of expansions in the works. We're honestly not sure whether they're taking after other CCGs like Magic or Everquest with the frequent expansions. Scott Martins, the director of development for SOE Denver, had words about Legends of Norrath:
"When we showed Legends of Norrath at GenCon last month, it was just as big a hit with hobby and strategy gamers as it has been with our EQ and EQII players. We've had a great run so far with the exclusive access we've provided for our existing fans, and can't wait to bring it to a much wider audience with today's release. New players will be able to enjoy the game in a single worldwide community with thousands of people that span its own client as well as both of our EverQuest MMOs."
One thing that sets Legends of Norrath apart from older CCGs like Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh is the inclusion of single-player campaigns in addition to player-versus-player battles. As with logging on to a game of Everquest, you can fly solo to complete quests and earn special loot cards.
Those with a hankering for some intensely strategic card-based battling should check out the Legends of Norrath site for a client download, FAQs, and much more info.
